Garment industry expected to get smaller next year

On industry estimates, the garment sector has already shrunk from about 800 factories during the quota era, to around 300 factories by now. The sector is expected shrink further within 2009, due to industry “consolidation,” to survive increasing financial difficulties.

Brandix takes Gold at National Cleaner Production Awards

Colombo, Monday, October 20, 2008; The internationally unique Brandix Green Plant in Seeduwa, the world’s first and only Platinum-rated Green apparel factory, clinched the Gold Award at the National Cleaner Production Awards 2008, in recognition of its environment-friendly production practices. The factory which won the top award in Large Organization category, also received an award for energy efficiency and a Merit certificate for excellence in resources efficiency, at a gala awards ceremony held at Trans Asia Hotel last week.

Elivitiya Kanishta Vidyalaya is a school situated in the Chilaw District with 117 and 12 teachers. The School was in need of refurbishment. Next Sourcing limited and its Social Committee embarked on the mission of uplifting the school and its facilities in June 2008. The project was completed and handed over on 25th September 2008.

Sixteen elite Sri Lanka schools swimmers now competing at the 3rd Asian Schools Swimming Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, have received the inspirational support of Brandix Lanka Limited, the country’s largest apparel exporter. SRI LANKA: Textile trade tops summit agendas

The SAARC (South Asia Association for Regional Cooperation) Chamber of Commerce has reviewed regional cooperation in textile and apparel at a recent summit. Apparel and textiles were one of the areas identified by the SAARC Chamber for business collaboration and intra-regional investments. "South Asian countries can pool specialisations to increase our world market share in textile and apparel," said the president of the SAARC Chamber, Tariq Sayeed, speaking at the annual Economic Summit organised by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce last week. "Sri Lanka and India can share technologies and processes with the others. Also Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have preferential access to EU markets.
