‘Let’s go for China!’– India’s Zohra

As the first ever textile agreement between India and Sri Lanka became a reality, both neighbours mulled joining to enter a coveted global textile foothold-China, the world’s largest textile market. "China’s textiles are gradually moving from production to consumption. Using our strengths together-Sri Lanka’s first class garment manufacturing infrastructure and India’s quality fabric outputs-let us jointly compete for China’s textile market" said a determined Ms Zohra Chaterji (Secretary of Indian Ministry of Textiles) on 09 September in Colombo, a press communiqué issued by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce said.

The first ever textile agreement between India and Sri Lanka will be inked today (9 September) in Colombo. The Memorandum of Understanding on new textile cooperation effort is the latest development in the aftermath of Indian announcement in September 2012 that Sri Lanka can export eight million apparel pieces at zero duty to India.

HSBC Colombo Fashion Week’s 2nd Resort Show in Galle on 5-6 October

The second edition of the HSBC Colombo Fashion Week Resort Wear Show will be held on 5 and 6 October in Galle. HSBC CFW in its 10th year launched its second annual show last year (2012), which focused on a collection of resort wear outfits; this event was held in Negombo at Jetwing Lagoon. This unique seasonal annual show was well received by the fashion public in both Sri Lanka and the region.

Design deemed as the ‘next big business’ by experts around the world (particularly in the UK), is undergoing rapid global growth. As one of the few industries that performed well during the destructive economic storm of the recent past, ‘design’ is winning the support of governments around the world in hope of recovery from the turmoil. With this, design professionals have the highest demand in the post-recession world economy, where ‘design’ is the highest value addition within competitive markets. What are the businesses included in the design industry? The UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport, which has responsibility here, has defined them as including: advertising; architecture/interior design; graphic design; game design; crafts; product design; fashion; film and animations and of course publishing.


Sri Lanka and India in link to boost textile sector

India and Sri Lanka will sign a deal to promote handloom, powerloom and textile as a delegation visits the island during a fabric exhibition to be held next week.
